Portable GPS for Your Portable Life

By Darryl

It seems that the entire world is much more on-the-go than it was even 20 years ago. It used to be that only business travelers had portable alarm clocks and cell phones, and the rest of the world made do with their in-home telephones and electric alarm clocks.

In today’s world, the entire population, to an extent, seems to be going wireless. Of course, the most obvious changes are laptop computers and wireless internet.

Why is this? It’s because cables confine people to one spot, and ours is the age of mobility. Everything is portable nowadays; people are portable, dividing their lives between multiple homes and multiple job sites, and in order to make this possible, the essentials for life have to be portable too. Everything from computers, alarm clocks, DVD players and GPS must be portable to be attractive to the modern consumer.

Haven’t Heard Much About Portable GPS?

When GPS first entered the market of general consumers, it was a mounted device to place on the dashboard of your car so that you could find your way to your destination more easily.

Of course, that was a revolution unto itself, but inadvertently, consumers started dreaming about being able to take the GPS unit of their dashboard and put it in their pockets.

After all, how long are you going to stay in your car once you reach Manhattan?! Wouldn’t it be great to navigate the city on foot? Only if the GPS is portable would that be possible.

It’s for this reason that GPS units are getting fancier and fancier. Everything from cell phones to laptops are now being equipped with GPS. Some of the earlier versions of cell phone GPS required that the cell phone be mounted to the dashboard similar to a standard car unit, but new technology is making the GPS cell phone portable.

This means that your cell phone will become a portable GPS unit to take with you wherever you go.

GPS software and capability is coming out for handheld computers such as Palm Pilots in addition to cell phones and computers. These multi-functional tools are more likely to be purchased in the future than the strictly GPS portable unit.

Why have a cell phone, a Palm Pilot and a handheld GPS when you can simply add GPS to your cell phone or your Palm Pilot? The wave of the future is upon the western world and parts of the eastern world—are you ready for it?
